FAQs about Products

Do Vet-Kem® products have an expiration date?

Our products do not carry expiration dates. They will remain effective long after the date of manufacture, when storage instructions on the label are followed. For best results, we do recommend using any flea and tick product within two to three years of purchase.

If my veterinarian does not carry Vet-Kem® products, how can I purchase the products?

Vet-Kem® products are available to consumers exclusively through veterinarians. If your veterinary clinic does not carry Vet-Kem® products, they can order the products from a distributor of professional veterinary supplies. Most likely, a distributor your clinic already orders from carries our products. If your veterinarian would like more information on our products and our distributors, they can contact us through our website or call us at 1-888-241-9545.

I haven't been able to find my favorite Vet-Kem® product. Has it been discontinued?

We are always updating current products & working on new ones. If you haven't been able to find your favorite product, please feel free to contact us through our website or at 1-800-766-7661. Our Representatives can provide you with updated information on our most popular products from previous years, as well as our new additions.

Can Vet-Kem® products be used with Frontline® and Advantage®?

All of our products may be used with Frontline® or Advantage® if your veterinarian recommends Vet-Kem® products as part of your complete flea and tick control program. For example, Vet-Kem® collars may be recommended along with Advantage® flea control, in order to kill ticks. Our extensive line of shampoos and home treatment products can be used with almost any oral or topical flea control product, including spot type applications. Since many Vet-Kem® products kill flea eggs, they will provide long-term control when used with other products that kill adult fleas.

Which of your products can be used on horses?

Vet-Kem makes one product for use on horses. Our Ovitrol Plus® Flea, Tick & Bot Spray comes in a 16 oz. spray. This product prevents botfly eggs from hatching and also kills and repels fleas, ticks, lice, flies, mosquitoes and gnats.

What if my pet grooms or licks himself/herself after a Vet-Kem® product is applied?

Normal grooming after application is expected and should not be a problem when a product is used according to label directions. The amount of active ingredient in each dose is enough to be effective against a flea, tick or other targeted insect. The pet, which is much larger than the targeted pest, should not be affected by this small amount of active ingredient. All of our products have been tested for use on dogs and/or cats, knowing they will groom themselves.

How long should I wait before I allow my children and pets back into treated areas in the home?

Some premise product labels give a specific time frame for re-entering the treated area, so the label should always be checked first. If the product label doesn't give a re-entry time, then it's okay for pets and people to return once the treated surfaces have dried. Our premise sprays dry quickly, but there isn't an exact amount of time that can be predicted in every situation. As a rule of thumb, we recommend at least a 20 minute drying time when using a Vet-Kem® aerosol spray and a 1-hour drying time when using a Vet-Kem® pump spray for the home.

Can I use products containing DEET on my pet?

No. The ASPCA Animal Poison Contol Center reports that dogs and cats are very sensitive to DEET and may develop neurologic problems if DEET-containing products are applied to them. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center also reports that products containing concentrated tea tree oil (melaleuca oil), pennyroyal oil and d-limonene can cause serious health problems in pets, such as weakness, paralysis, liver injury and seizures.

Can I use your shampoo for my pet even though it doesn’t have an insect problem?

Yes, pets need grooming and cleaning to maintain healthy skin and hair. Vet-Kem® shampoos are concentrated for lathering and cleansing. They leave your pet’s coat soft, shining and manageable. The shampoo removes loose dandruff, dirt and scales while providing a pleasant scent to both you and your pet.
